If you take Tribulus terrestris, you certainly know which are the biologically active substances in the herb that are responsible for its effectiveness. These are the furostanol saponins and, more specifically, protodioscin. The origin is the first precondition for the effectiveness of Tribulus terrestris extract. The herb, which grows wild and is collected in ecological regions of Bulgaria in a precisely defined period of the year, is preferable. In addition to protodioscin, it also contains the full spectrum of phytosteroids, which reinforce each other’s effect, incl. the effect of protodioscin (Mengquan Li etal. Cell Physiol Biochem 2013;32:1299-1308).

The second important precondition for the effectiveness of Tribulus terrestris is that the herbal extract is standardized. Standardized extracts have a guaranteed constant quantity and quality of bioactive substances – furostanol saponins and protodioscin.
Tribulus extract standardized to furostanol saponins is much more potent and effective than products standardized to total saponins, regardless of the mg amount per capsule.
According to laboratory data, a 60% furostanol saponins (as protodioscin) extract of Trbulus terrestris provides more than 1800% (total) saponins. The high concentration of bioactive substances allows fewer mg per capsule and many times higher efficiency compared to products standardized to 90% saponins for example.

There are different methods for extracting biologically active substances from
the plant Tribulus terrestris. The products obtained during the extraction represent total extracts. They contain an uncontrollable amount of active ingredients, unwanted impurities and ballast substances.
It is necessary for these total extracts to go through a series of purifications to reduce the ballast substances in the extract and ensure a higher efficiency of the final product. These purifications, in addition to removing excess ballast substances, also concentrate the active substances in the extract.
One of the unwanted substances that are extracted simultaneously with furostanol saponins, are pyrrolizidine alkaloids. They can be present both naturally in the herb and as a result of the presence of unwanted botanical impurities.
